Sojourn Montrose Church cares for our city and neighborhood by
Partnering Strategically For The Love of Houston.
We’ve identified the following Gospel-Priority-Initiatives to engage with as a church. We engage through Prayer, Volunteering, and Financial Giving.
To get involved, contact us and get plugged in with our Church Communication Platform!
“Thus says the LORD of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.”
Zechariah 7:9–10
The Widow
In Scripture, widows represent vulnerable women without protection or provision; we apply this to young single mothers who are served by the organization YoungLives. God calls His church to honor and protect women who are vulnerable and bearing heavy burdens alone. Young single moms carry a huge load—financially, emotionally, and spiritually.
The Fatherless
God names Himself “Father of the fatherless.” Foster children and kids in crisis are precious to Him. The Riverside Project is a Houston organization that coordinates efforts to help these children and families.
The Sojourner
Our God not only tolerates the sojourner - He loves the sojourner. He feeds and clothes them, and then tells His people, “Love the sojourner.” Refugees and immigrants in Houston are often far from home, language, culture, and support, and lack the resources to navigate complex systems and barriers to citizenship. Houston Welcomes Refugees is an organization that matches refugee families with Christian communities and meets basic needs - giving honor, dignity, and community to the sojourner in our city.
The Poor
God sees every act of generosity to the poor as a loan to Himself. Our homeless neighbors are not invisible to Him. Sojourn has a volunteer partnership with Montrose Street Reach, which feeds the poor among us and presents to them the gospel.
Education
In addition to the non-profit partnerships above, Sojourn Montrose also facilitates a mentorship program at Lanier Middle School, an HISD public school in our geography. Please email Liz Torti (liz@sojournmontrose.org) for more information.
Church Planting
Sojourn Montrose ultimately believes that God’s “Plan A” for reaching a broken world is through His bride, the Church! Therefore, we are a church committed to planting churches. Beyond planting directly, we also partner with The Houston Church Planting Network and the Acts 29 Network to strategically plant churches in both the city of Houston and to plant churches worldwide!
